ProtoHype started the show Saturday night at the Sound Stage off perfectly. The intense bass drops and crowd hype was only the beginning of what turned out to be an amazing night. This was the fourth anniversary show for Steez Promo. Dieselboy headlined with Smash Gordon, while ProtoHype and ETC!ETC! opened. This was my first time ever being at this particular venue, and I was incredibly pleased with it. Before I even walked in, I noticed a huge advantage to Sound Stage – there was not a ridiculously long line to get inside! They run security very well, making sure that bags get checked and people are on their way in a quick, timely manner, which is something I’ve seen other venues struggle greatly with. Upon walking in, I had great vibes from the crowd. Everyone seemed friendly and this show was pleasantly lacking in the “frat-boy” type crowd that venues near college towns tend to attract, which is surprising since Sound Stage is very close to multiple colleges.
ProtoHype blew me away. I didn’t realize how heavy his music was. Another thing, which I thought was really cool, was that he was very involved with the crowd. After his set, he walked around the crowd and actually took pictures with some of the crowd members. Smash Gordon was great as anticipated, and ect!ect! was good as well. Dielselboy was much better than I had anticipated. Traditionally I think Drum and Bass is too repetitive so I wasn’t expecting to be thrilled by his performance. I thought that for Drum and Bass he was very good, and even though it isn’t my favorite style I can respect what a good DJ he is.
