Copia Doble Systema are a Digital Cumbia duo from Denmark. Cumbia has been growing in popularity recently, so I thought it would be a good idea to interview one of the protagonists of this growing genre. Here’s what happened.
1. To begin with, could you just explain in a few sentences what Cumbia is?
Cumbia started on the carribean beaches of Colombia. The original style was a fusion of native indian, african and european influences, and often served as a dating music / courtship nights among the african population. During internal conflicts, migrating colombians brought the vibe all around south and central america. The cumbia that we as a crew is into build on the legacy of all the older styles, mixed with the digital production styles of electronica, hip hop, club music and bass.
2. What effect do you think Moombahton has had on Cumbia?
It has made Digital Cumbia way more accepted as club music. We even get to play in nightclubs at prime time pretty often, instead of only being a concert band.
3. How did you guys meet and how did you get into production?
Our crew was formed by the Norwegian DJ, Copyflex, as he discovered Digital Cumbia sound when touring Brazil in 2008. And after meeting south american artists like Fauna, Hijo De La Cumbia and El Remolon, he rented an old brothel in central Copenhagen for studio and rehearsal use and created a crew with producers, musicians, DJ’s and mc’s to feed the output and shows. That house later developed into a larger collective of artists and admin’s, taking the name Yo FOK.
4. How has 2012 been for you? And where do you intend to be this time next year?
2012 was a year of action and change for Copia Doble Systema. We played at a string of club shows as well as Roskilde Festival in Denmark and other festivals in EU and we even gave a concert in Caracas, Venezuela. The change was that our regular singer Pepita left the band to work on her own music. Now Copia operates as a live trio with changing guest singers and a focus on the music and visuals.
5. Finally are there any Cumbia or any producers you would tip for success this year?
Success is hard to define, but I think artists like Chancha Via Circuito (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Frikstailers (Mexico City), Cumbia Cosmonauts (Australia) and Uproot Andy (NYC) are destined for more attention this year.
